Mark your calendars, readers. In just under a month, Baltimore is holding the 2nd annual Baltimore Urban Book Festival! Sunday, May 6 from 1-8pm at the Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park, you can see some of your favorite urban authors live and in person.
Presented by Author Chris Hicks, AAMBC and The Frederick Douglass-Isaac Myers Maritime Park, and sponsored by Life Changing Books, this event is the only book festival in Baltimore that focuses on African American literature. Besides Hicks, you’ll be able to see well-known black writers like Omar Tyree, Miss KP, Tamika Newhouse, Jimmy LaSaint, LaDawn Black, Booker T. Mattison, and many, many more.
The fest has plenty of interesting events, including panels on African American literature and the Ebony Chronicles of Elevation Anthology, the AAMBC (African Americans on the Move Book Club) Awards, and Chocolate Chats, where audience members will be allowed to ask questions of some of their favorite authors. Kids won’t be left out either, with a separate tent that will have all kind of activities – everything from storytelling and lectures, face painting and a moon bounce.
Regular admission is just $5, but the festival also offers free entry to all students (college students need to bring their school IDs) and registered book clubs. If you are interested in attending, check out the festival’s registration page, where you can volunteer or reregister your book club . Still not sure? Learn more about the festival and get to know some of the featured writers at their blog.
